Certificates for School Absences and Missing Exams
GPs are not contractually obliged to provide a sick note for pupils who are off sick from school, nor are they obliged to provide sickness certification for students who miss an exam or believe their performance was affected due to illness
If you’ve been off sick for more than 7 days
We ask for a response period of five working days from receiving a request for a medical certificate. These can be backdated in order to ensure continuity.
- A fee of £17.50 is payable for private certificates.
If you've been off sick for 7 days or less
If you’re off work sick for 7 days or less, your employer should not ask for medical evidence that you’ve been ill. Instead, they can ask you to confirm that you’ve been ill. You can do this by filling in a form yourself when you return to work. We call this self-certification.
